01 The homes

The homes of Wandsworth.

Wandsworth stretches from the Thames at Battersea and Putney down to Tooting and Furzedown, and its housing changes almost street by street. A kitchen or wardrobe that works in a Southfields terrace will not be the same one that works in a Nine Elms apartment, so we start every design with the actual room.

Victorian and Edwardian terraces

Much of the borough is period terraced housing. Around Wandsworth Common the streets are mostly Victorian terraces, and the Southfields Grid is made up almost entirely of Victorian terraced houses, some of them converted into flats over the years. In Earlsfield you find the same Victorian terraces and converted flats, with some slightly larger Edwardian terraces among them. These houses bring the familiar London layout: a narrower back room, chimney breasts with alcoves either side, and walls and floors that are rarely true.

Mansion blocks

Battersea and Balham both have red-brick mansion flats. The south side of Prince of Wales Drive, facing Battersea Park, is lined with late-Victorian mansion blocks, most of them begun in the early-to-mid 1890s. Balham has its own mix of mansion blocks, Edwardian townhouses and Victorian villas, plus Art Deco blocks such as Du Cane Court. Putney has mansion blocks too, including Kenilworth Court on the river.

Larger period houses in Putney and Balham

Parts of Putney have large Victorian and Edwardian houses, some with big gardens, while West Putney mixes terraced houses with conversion flats and larger semi-detached homes. Putney Hill adds 1930s Art Deco blocks and 1960s purpose-built flats alongside its mansion blocks.

Early council cottages and post-war estates

Tooting has the Totterdown Fields estate, built by the London County Council between 1901 and 1911 as a cottage estate of more than 1,200 houses. In Roehampton, the Alton Estate is one of the largest council estates in the UK, built by the LCC in the 1950s with point blocks, slab blocks and maisonettes.

Riverside and Nine Elms new builds

Along the river there are many new or refurbished buildings, including Chelsea Bridge Wharf, Putney Wharf Tower near Putney Bridge, and the regeneration around Nine Elms and Battersea Power Station, where homes range from studios to four-bedroom family properties.

02 Kitchens

Kitchens planned for Wandsworth rooms.

The kitchen problem in Wandsworth depends on which kind of home you live in. A period terrace, a mansion flat and a new-build apartment each need a different plan, and a bespoke kitchen is drawn to fit the room you actually have rather than the nearest standard size.

Terraced houses: the long back room

In a Victorian or Edwardian terrace the kitchen usually sits at the back of the house. If the house has been extended at the rear or into the side, the result is often one long wall and an open space towards the garden. We plan that wall as a single run, with tall units for the oven and fridge at one end, and look at whether a kitchen island or a peninsula makes sense in the space that is left. Where the room has not been extended, a galley or L-shape with full-height storage usually gives more than a standard layout would. End panels are scribed to the walls, because walls in these houses are rarely straight.

Mansion flats and conversions

Kitchens in mansion blocks and converted flats are often compact, sometimes with high ceilings and awkward corners where a chimney or a riser runs through. That is where made-to-measure pays off: wall cabinets can run up to the ceiling, corners can be fitted with proper corner mechanisms, and nothing is wasted on filler panels. Our small kitchens page covers the ideas that work best in tight rooms.

New-build apartments

In Nine Elms and along the river, many kitchens are open-plan and visible from the living space. A handleless kitchen in a matt or high-gloss finish keeps the run calm and flat, and tall units can hide appliances completely. In a period house, painted shaker fronts tend to sit more naturally with the original features.

Finishes and worktops

Fronts come in matt or textured laminate, high gloss, painted MDF in any colour, or framed shaker profiles. Worktops are laminate or compact laminate around 12 mm thick, which is waterproof and allows an undermounted sink. You can see the full range on our materials and finishes page.

03 Wardrobes

Wardrobes and storage that fit the walls.

Period houses in Wandsworth were built with very little storage, and new-build flats often have less than you would like. Fitted furniture made to the exact measurements of each wall is usually the simplest way to fix both.

Alcoves either side of the chimney breast

Bedrooms in Victorian and Edwardian terraces often have a chimney breast with two alcoves. Alcove wardrobes fill those recesses from floor to ceiling, with hanging rails, shelves and drawers inside, and can be painted to match the room so they read as part of the house.

Loft rooms and eaves

Where a terrace has had its loft converted, the new bedroom usually has sloping ceilings and low knee walls. Loft and eaves wardrobes are cut to follow the slope, so the space under the roof becomes usable storage instead of a gap behind a bed.

Sliding doors for smaller bedrooms

In converted flats and new-build apartments the second bedroom is often tight. Sliding wardrobes need no clearance for doors to swing, and mirrored doors make a small room feel larger. Aluminium profiles come in silver, black, champagne or white, with panels in wood décors, colours, mirror or tinted glass.

Hallways, understairs and dressing rooms

A narrow terrace hallway can take a shallow coat and shoe cupboard, and the space under the stairs can be fitted with pull-out drawers. In larger houses a spare room can become a walk-in wardrobe. All of it is covered on our fitted wardrobes page.

04 Period and new

Mansion flats, Grid terraces and riverside apartments.

What sets Wandsworth apart is the range: a Victorian terrace in the Southfields Grid, an 1890s mansion flat on Prince of Wales Drive and a new apartment in Nine Elms can all be a short distance apart. Each asks for a slightly different approach.

Mansion flats in Battersea and Balham

Mansion flats usually have generous ceiling heights and solid walls, but rooms that were laid out long before modern kitchens. We use the height: wall units and wardrobes that go up to the ceiling, with top cupboards for things you rarely need. Lift-up doors on wall cabinets, using Blum lift-up systems, avoid doors swinging into your head in a narrow kitchen. Because mansion blocks often have a managing agent and shared staircases, we plan delivery and fitting around the building rules from the start.

Family terraces in Earlsfield, Southfields and Wandsworth Common

In the terraced streets, the brief is usually a whole house rather than a single room: a kitchen at the back, wardrobes in the bedrooms, storage in the hallway and perhaps a loft room. We can design all of it together so the finishes match, and measure everything on the same visit. Our bespoke furniture page covers the rooms beyond the kitchen, including living-room media walls, home office desks, window seats and beds with storage.

New builds in Nine Elms and on the river

New-build apartments tend to have straight walls and level floors, but compact rooms and open-plan layouts where everything is on show. A bespoke kitchen there is about precision and finish: handleless fronts, integrated appliances and storage that uses every centimetre. Wardrobes in new builds often need to work around radiators, window reveals and service cupboards, which is easier to solve with made-to-measure units than with flat-pack.

05 Practicalities

Practicalities in Wandsworth.

Most of the work on a Wandsworth kitchen or wardrobe happens in our workshop. On site, the main things to think about are access to the building, any building rules, and parking for the delivery.

Access, stairs and lifts

Terraced houses usually mean narrow front doors and tight stairs, while mansion blocks may have shared stairwells and small or no lifts. We take access into account when we measure, and cabinets and wardrobes are made in sections sized to come through the building. In new-build blocks, check whether the lift needs to be booked and whether there is a loading bay or concierge procedure.

Leasehold flats and building rules

If you own a leasehold flat in a mansion block or a new development, you will often need consent from the freeholder or managing agent before replacing a kitchen, and many blocks set working hours for contractors. It is worth asking before the design is finalised, so the fitting dates can be agreed.

Parking and loading

Wandsworth Council lists 16 parking zones across the borough, from Battersea and Clapham Junction to Putney, Roehampton, Tooting Broadway and Furzedown. The council also runs parking bay suspensions for situations such as domestic removals and access to sites, subject to its approval. Rules vary by street, so check the parking arrangements for your road with the council before the delivery date.

Conservation areas and listed buildings

Wandsworth has 46 conservation areas, including the Alton Estate, Battersea Square, Deodar Road and West Putney. Conservation area status mainly affects external changes rather than the inside of your home. In some areas, such as the Shaftesbury Park Estate, an Article 4 direction means external alterations visible from the street, including replacing windows and doors, need planning permission. Replacing a kitchen or fitting wardrobes inside a home normally does not need planning permission. Listed buildings are different: many internal alterations need listed building consent, so check with the council if your home is listed.

Working with your builder

We do not do building work, plastering, electrics, gas or decorating. If your kitchen is part of an extension or renovation, we work alongside your builder and trades, and any gas work must be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer.

07 How it works

How it works, from measure to fitting.

The process is the same wherever you are in Wandsworth, and you do not pay anything or commit to anything until you have approved the design and the price.

  1. Send an enquiry. Fill in the online form with a few details about the room. We reply within one working day.
  2. Free measure at your home. Our London fitter visits to measure the room, check walls, floors and access, and talk through how you use the space.
  3. Free first 3D design. We prepare a 3D design and one fixed, itemised price that includes manufacture, delivery to London and fitting. The measure-and-design stage usually takes 1–2 weeks.
  4. Approve, then we build. There is no deposit and no obligation until you approve the design and price. The furniture is then made in our own workshop in Bulgaria.
  5. Delivery and fitting. It travels to London by dedicated transport and is installed by the same fitter who measured the room. From approved design to finished installation typically takes 4–6 weeks.

For budgeting, a bespoke kitchen is a guide of around £1,000–£1,200 per linear metre. That is a guide, not a quote; your fixed price comes with the design. See our kitchen prices page and our process for more detail.

08 Landlords

For landlords and investors in Wandsworth.

Wandsworth has converted flats in its period streets and new-build apartments in Nine Elms and along the river. If you let one of them, fitted furniture that is made to measure and built to last can make a rental easier to let and easier to maintain.

For converted flats in the period streets of Earlsfield, Southfields and Battersea, a compact, durable kitchen with moisture-resistant board under the sink and a compact laminate worktop holds up well between tenancies. Sliding wardrobes in bedrooms save floor space, which matters in smaller rooms. In new-build apartments, we can fit out a whole flat at once: kitchen, wardrobes, hallway storage and a media wall, all designed together and priced as one itemised quote.

If you manage several properties, our landlords and developers page explains how we handle repeat projects.

10 Questions

Wandsworth: straight answers.

All questions & answers →

Do you measure and fit in every part of Wandsworth?

Yes. We cover the whole borough, from Battersea, Nine Elms and Clapham Junction to Putney, Roehampton, Wandsworth Town, Earlsfield, Southfields, Balham, Tooting and Furzedown. The measure and the first 3D design are free, and our London fitter, who measures the room, is the same person who later installs the furniture. To arrange a visit, send us a few details through the online form and we will reply within one working day.

I live in a mansion flat in Battersea. Can you fit a kitchen there?

Yes. Mansion flats often have high ceilings and compact kitchens, and a bespoke kitchen can use the full height with tall wall units and lift-up doors. Before work starts, check whether your lease requires consent from the freeholder or managing agent, and whether the building has set working hours for contractors. We plan access and delivery around the building when we measure, and cabinets are made in sections sized to come through shared stairways.

Do I need planning permission for a new kitchen in a Wandsworth conservation area?

Replacing a kitchen or fitting wardrobes inside a home normally does not need planning permission. Conservation area status mainly affects external changes, and in some areas, such as the Shaftesbury Park Estate, an Article 4 direction covers external alterations visible from the street. If your home is listed, many internal alterations need listed building consent, so check with Wandsworth Council before you commit to a design.

Can you make wardrobes for a loft conversion in a terraced house?

Yes. Loft bedrooms in terraced houses usually have sloping ceilings and low knee walls, and loft or eaves wardrobes are made to follow the angle of the roof exactly. They can combine full-height hanging where the ceiling allows with drawers and shelves under the slope. See our loft wardrobes page for ideas, and we will measure the room on the free visit.

How much does a bespoke kitchen cost in Wandsworth?

As a guide for budgeting, a bespoke kitchen costs around £1,000–£1,200 per linear metre. That is not a quote. After the free measure we prepare a 3D design and one fixed, itemised price that includes manufacture, delivery to London and fitting. There is no deposit and no obligation until you approve the design and the price. We do not publish a guide price for wardrobes, because they vary too much.

Can you work with my builder on a Wandsworth extension?

Yes. If your new kitchen is part of a rear or side extension, we work alongside your builder and trades. We do not do building work, plastering, electrics, gas or decorating, so those stay with your builder, and gas work must be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer. We can measure once the walls are up, and the kitchen is typically installed 4–6 weeks after you approve the design.
